Payments & Stripe FAQ

Common questions about how payments work on Joyn, Stripe fees, payouts, and your monthly subscription.

How do payments work on Joyn?

When a parent books a class, they pay through Stripe — the same payment processor used by Shopify, Lyft, and millions of other businesses. The money goes directly to your Stripe account, and payouts hit your bank account automatically on a rolling 2-day basis.

Do I need a Stripe account?

Yes. During signup, you'll connect a Stripe account (or create a new one). This takes about 5-10 minutes if you're new to Stripe, or about 2 minutes if you already have an account. Stripe's onboarding walks you through everything step by step.

What information does Stripe need from me?

Stripe requires standard business verification (required by law for any payment processor):

  • Business type — individual, LLC, corporation, or nonprofit
  • Legal business name and EIN (or SSN for sole proprietors)
  • Business address
  • Bank account for payouts (routing and account number)
  • Identity verification — name, date of birth, and last 4 of SSN (sometimes a photo ID)

Joyn never sees or stores this information — it goes directly to Stripe.

What does it cost?

There are two components:

| Fee | Amount | Who pays | |-----|--------|----------| | Stripe processing fee | 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction | You (the org) — this is the standard card processing rate | | Joyn platform fee | 2% per transaction | Deducted automatically | | Joyn monthly subscription | $20/month | Deducted from your Stripe balance or charged to your card |

Example: A parent pays $100 for a class

| | Amount | |---|---| | Parent pays | $100.00 | | Stripe processing fee | -$3.20 | | Joyn platform fee (2%) | -$2.00 | | You receive | $94.80 |

How do payouts work?

Stripe automatically deposits your earnings to your bank account every 2 business days. You can view your payout schedule and history in your Stripe Dashboard at any time.

Can I see my transaction history?

Yes. You have full access to your own Stripe Dashboard where you can view all transactions, payouts, disputes, and customer details. You can also see booking and payment summaries inside Joyn.

What if I already use Square or another payment processor?

Your Stripe account for Joyn is separate from any other payment tools you use. You can continue using Square, PayPal, or other processors for non-Joyn transactions.

What if a parent requests a refund?

Refunds are processed through Joyn and go back to the parent's original payment method via Stripe. Stripe's processing fee is not returned on refunds. See Refunds and Credits for the full details.

Is my financial information secure?

Absolutely. Stripe is a PCI Level 1 certified payment processor — the highest level of security certification in the payments industry. Joyn never stores credit card numbers, bank accounts, or other sensitive payment data.

What if I don't finish the Stripe setup right away?

No problem. You can set up your classes in Joyn immediately. You just won't be able to accept payments until your Stripe account is fully verified. You'll see a banner reminding you to complete the setup.

Do parents need a Stripe account?

No. Parents simply enter their credit or debit card at checkout, like any online purchase. They don't need to create a Stripe account.

Can I offer payment plans or installments?

Yes. Joyn supports payment plans that automatically charge parents on a schedule you define. All installments are processed through Stripe with the same fee structure.

What happens if a payment fails?

Stripe automatically retries failed payments. If the payment ultimately fails, you'll be notified in Joyn and the enrollment status will be updated accordingly. See Common Payment Issues for troubleshooting steps.
